Theatre piece, Nomzamo, written by playwright Gcebile Dlamini and starring Hillbrow’s up-and-coming theatre star Tumelo Nkoele, is set to dazzle theatre lovers on the weekend of 24 and 25 October.

The show will be staged at the Olive Tree Theatre in Alexandra’s Yarona Mall Complex as part of the Women’s Theatre Festival which seeks to promote the advancement of women in the theatre industry.

The production will also feature Neliseka Malinga as uGogo of Nomzamo; while Malinga’s younger sister, Thobeka, plays the character of Isaac.

The play is about Nomzamo, a young Swazi girl who is being abused by a family member and battles to cope in life, but finally decides that if she is to move on, she needs to let go of the family secret.

She then decides to tell all as part of her healing process and to enable her to face the harsh reality of her abuse. Nomzamo, which means trials and tribulations in IsiSwati, finally finds the healing she has sought.

Dlamini, who is the writer, producer and director of the play, said her aim was bring about awareness of the goings-on within families and their closely guarded secrets which tend to harm the victims unless a healing process is found.

“I hope the public will love the piece, which is not only entertaining but is educational as well, and helps to spread the message about the rampant abuse of girls and women in our society,” Dlamini said.

She called on the community of Alexandra to come in their numbers to be dazzled by the theatre piece which she hopes will go places after its initial showing at the Olive Tree Theatre.
