Get ready to rAge

JOBURG - The annual online gaming festival which draws crowds of people, rAge Expo, is back this month.

Computer and gaming enthusiasts from all over the country will forget to eat and sleep and will rather begin their month living online and immersed in technology, when the expo commences on 9 October at the TicketPro Dome.

You can buy new games and consoles, chat with local comic book artists, or take selfies with your favourite cosplayers (people who act out a game or series in full costume). The show is a glimpse into the future and it has always been about trying out new things and getting some hands-on time and experience before making your purchase decisions.

The three-day event will see countless gamers from around the nation training for the competitions in which they compete against players from other provinces in a number of online games, including World of Warcraft.

The teams will fight it out over their headsets and gaming consoles for cash prizes and the title of top gamer in South Africa.

As this generation plugs in more and more with the internet and one another in new and interesting ways, the appetite for more of the same grows, and rAge Expo provides a platform to touch and feel, try and experiment. It is the place to go each year to see all the latest goodies presented in an accessible way and be surrounded by people who all share the same passion for the virtual.

Not only a time for fun, rAge also develops game developers for the future. “The world of gaming, although relatively small in South Africa, is showing a steady growth rate,” explained Geoff Burrows, founder of Zero Degrees Games.

“This means that sustainable career opportunities are being created, as well as an increase in revenue contributing to the gross domestic product. Globally, gaming is an industry valued at an estimated $91.5 billion; and with South Africa in dire need for job creation, gaming is well positioned to provide the platform.”

Many call it the event of the year where gamers can escape reality for a single day, or even the whole weekend – so don’t miss out.
