Safety at Sexpo

JOBURG - With Sexpo around the corner, City Buzz has been wondering how parents keep their children from witnessing the X-rated content of the expo in the public arena, so we spoke to the Film and Publication Board (FPB) about how they're keeping the kiddies safe and guarded against this age-restricted content.

As partners, Sexpo and the FPB are working to help fight against child pornography and child trafficking, as well as to empower people to enjoy a healthy sexual lifestyle.

Janine Raftopoulos, public education and communication manager at FPB, explained how the board is working with Sexpo to combat the plight of child exploitation and other related issues.

“The FPB conducts campaigns to raise awareness and speaks out against child pornography through cyber-safety initiatives that target communities and citizens with the aim to educate and empower them on these social ills and provide information on how to tackle these issues,” said Raftopoulos.

With more and more teens finding means of dabbling in the procurement and use of adult content, it is especially important to find out how the FPB will ensure that no person with a fake ID will be able to enter the Sexpo premises.

“Computicket and Groupon do an age verification when tickets are purchased, and at the show all of the ticket checkers are tasked with the obligation to ask for ID or driver’s licences when they are unsure that someone is over the age of 18,” she explained.

“It is also clearly stated that no prams or babies are allowed at Sexpo. Every single avenue possible is used to ensure that children are protected against being exposed to pornography. Fraudulent IDs are against the law and will be reported if found. Sexpo is intended to be a fun, annual event for adults only.”

The FPB is also wary of other issues and is set on combating these. “The FPB considers unconstitutional issues such as beastiality and necrophilia. A film will be classified as XX if it contains the aforementioned.”
