A life of tragedy played out on stage

ALEXANDRA - A narration of a multi-layered life of tragedy of a young woman is destined for the bigger stage.

Centred on Fresh Footprints, a script by world acclaimed poet and writer Mongane Serote, the play features Pretoria-born Princess Shabangu and is being rehearsed at Olivetree Theatre. With her acting prowess Shabangu is equally destined for greater things with her ability to bring to life a character named Tsidi.

The story is about the tragic life of Tsidi, a North West Province woman lured to Joburg, a city with ‘walls that thunder’ in search of freedom, strength and knowledge. These aspirations unfortunately turn to illusionary goals that are replaced by many social pitfalls and ills, leading her to abandon her self pride for prostitution to be able to survive. She finds out that her sister who was her last hope for support, has also turned to selling her body and soul to survive the hostile environment.

Despite Tsidi’s musical talent, she is unable to use it to her financial benefit. Instead, her talent is quickly exploited for the benefit of others, further entrapping her in unimaginable sexual enslavement.

In the end Tsidi has no option but to return to her rural home where she appeals to her deceased parents’ spirits and religious convictions for salvation and strength to help her start afresh.

The story may reflect the experiences of many, and the play will have audiences marvel at Shabangu’s and director Ntsieng Mokgoro’s talents in bringing the character to life.
