Mamma Mia! Guess who’s coming to Montecasino

JOBURG - Montecasino's upcoming production will take viewers from the azure Aegean sea to the Swedish pop of the '70s.

The Mamma Mia International Tour will grace the Teatro at Montecasino for four weeks starting on 24 March.

The musical is Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision of the storytelling magic of Swedish-pop quartet, ABBA’s timeless songs on stage. To date, the musical has been seen by more than 54 million people in 39 productions in 14 languages. Mamma Mia – the movie is the highest grossing live-action musical film of all time. This is the first time in 10 years that the international tour production of Mamma Mia will perform in Johannesburg.

The Mamma Mia International Tour is currently in rehearsals in London. The new cast includes British stars, Sara Poyzer, who will play Donna Sheridan, Shobna Gulati as Tanya and Sue Devaney as Rosie. Poyzer has also played Donna in the West End production of Mamma Mia and her other notable West End roles include Emilia in Othello and Mam in Billy Elliot.

The cast for the South African run of the tour will also include Poyzer’s real-life husband, Richard Standing as Sam Carmichael, Michael Beckley as Bill Austin and Mark Jardine as Harry Bright.

The magic of ABBA’s timeless classics propels this enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship unfolding on a Greek island paradise. The story centres around a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father on the eve of her wedding.

From West End to a global phenomenon, the London production of Mamma Mia has now been seen by more than 10 percent of the entire UK population. It is one of only five musicals to have run for more than 10 years both on Broadway and in the West End, and in 2011 it became the first western musical ever to be staged in Mandarin in the People’s Republic of China.

Ticket prices range from R120 to R500.
