If you think of the number one South African female rapper, what name comes to mind? None? Then, lo and behold, the name that will soon pop up will be non other than Delta Choshi the Leo.

The talented world-class dancer from Alexandra has her feet firmly planted on the ground but her sights set on international success. Delta’s music can be described as a fusion of all the musical influences in her life, ranging from kwaito, reggae/dancehall, RnB and hip-hop.

Delta has been likened to the leader of the international female hip-hop industry, Missy Elliot. The fast pace, quick-thinking talent boasted by Missy Elliot are indeed attributes Delta shares. It is no wonder that Missy Elliot is one of her influences.

Delta is also influenced by the music that reverberates through Alexandra where she grew up, allowing her to explore different genres in her music and dance. Her inspiration comes from the strong, black role models of her mother and grandmother who raised her, to the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Queen Latifah and Beyonce. These women all represent a strength and tenacity that she mirrors.

Not only is she an accomplished dancer and musician who has been stealthily moving within the industry, Delta is often the life of the crowd. She has a quirky sense of humour and can make anyone clutch their stomachs with laughter. Then she turns around and rocks the stage with a spellbinding performance that leaves many in awe of her presence and talent.

“Reach for the moon so that if you miss you still floating among the stars,” she says.

This is one of the mottoes that Delta lives by and it sure is proving to be true. ‘Live.Learn.Inspire’ is not only the name of her dance workshop where she imparts her knowledge to others but is one of her fundamental principles.

To date, Delta has had a number of gigs where she wowed crowds by performing her first single Zaga, as well as a number of other songs she has recorded. Last year alone, she choreographed for singer Nothende on X-Factor SA and choreographed the kids’ flash mobs for Nike, Jordan and Converse.

Her ultimate goal is to be the first female South African rapper to reach number one status and also go international. She wants to inspire women to reach for their goals, pursue their dreams and be the best they can be.
