KEW - Liberty Community College's athletics sensation, Miriam Phiri seeks a financial backer to realise her dream athletics career.

A talented Liberty Community College athletics champion needs a financial backer to realise her dream of becoming a top athlete.

Miriam Phiri (14), a two-time 3 000m champion surprised many when she gave her peers a clean pair of heels at the Johannesburg East District Alex Cluster of Schools Athletics Meeting at the KwaBhekilanga Sports Ground.

She later went on to accomplish the same feat at the Johannesburg Inter Districts Schools meeting at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto but was unfortunately outdone in the provincial meeting held in Pretoria when her more affluent compatriots from the province competed.

Miriam astounded her own school teacher and coach, Nkululeko Ndlovu with her talent and he has touted her as the school’s own Caster Semenya in the making if only she can get some financial backing for her coaching requirements.

“I think she has a bright athletics career ahead of her if only she can be well nurtured and groomed, part of which goes with securing a financial backer and a sound training space,” Ndlovu said.

Miriam’s school has no training facilities and has to travel all the way to Bez Valley Park Sports Grounds which is 10km away.

In many instances, she foregoes her training session because the school’s bus has many other errands to run.
