Pholosho Junior Secondary School will be one of 16 schools taking part in the first steps on the path to the 2018 Future Champions Gauteng International Tournament.
The schools’ competition, known as the Future Champions Gauteng Schools Cup, will be played at the Vaal University of Technology on 17 to 18 February, pitting 16 of the best footballing school sides in the province against one another.
The teams will battle it out not just for the schools’ trophy but also for a spot in the semi-finals of this competition, which will qualify them for the Future Champions Gauteng Cup tournament to be staged on a date still to be announced.
This year’s competition will take on an added significance as it is played under the banner of ‘Inspiring football talent in the year of Nelson Mandela Centenary’, as the province marks 100 years of the birth of the global icon and founding father of South Africa’s democracy.
The schools’ cup tournament, organised by Global Sports International in conjunction with the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, and the Gauteng Department of Education, will see the 16 teams split into four pools of four.
“We are delighted to see the return of the Future Champions Gauteng Schools Cup in 2018, where another group of youngsters will be given the opportunity to showcase their talent on the sports field,” said Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture
and Recreation MEC Faith Mazibuko.
“This tournament has proven to be a huge success in the past for its ability to unearth and display the raw talent year after year. We cannot wait to see what talent will be on display this year.”
The other participating schools are Chipa Tabane Secondary School, Randfontein High School, Clapham Secondary School, Rosina Sedibane Modiba Sport School, Mom Sebone Secondary School, Fumana Secondary School,
Mohloli Secondary School, Maxeke High School, Suncrest High School, Johannesburg Secondary School, Thuto Lefa Secondary School, Lamula Jubilee High School, KwaDedangendlale High School, Soshanguve South High School and the Sport School of Excellence.
The schools have been selected as district winners at the Winter Games that were held in Gauteng in May last year. The semi-finalists at the Future Champions Gauteng Cup, which also involves the academies of the professional
clubs in the province, will participate in the Future Champions Gauteng International Tournament from 19 to 24 March.
