Ikage through to finals

ALEXANDRA – Ikage makes history by reaching finals of the Discovery Cup after many years on the bottom rung of the tournament.

Ikage Primary School boys team are through to the final of the Discovery Cup and will come face to face with defending champions Skeen Primary School on 1 November at the Number 3 Square Grounds.

This follows Ikage’s dramatic penalty shootout triumph against Emfundisweni Primary School, two teams which are traditionally the whipping boys of the Alex primary schools football. The semi-final had ended in a deadlock.

Ikage’s goalie was the hero of the day as he managed to keep his team in the game after pulling off some tremendous saves in normal time.

Emfundisweni, marshalled by their star midfielder Thulani Ngobeni of Black Poison FC in the Alex League, wasted no time in making their intentions clear from the start. Ngobeni had two free keep attempts which were goalward bound but the ever alert Ikage keeper parried them over the bar.

However, Ikage also wasted their fair share of scoring opportunities with the tie going to the dreaded lottery of penalties. Ikage scored all their three penalties while Emfundisweni netted two and the other bounced off the upright.

This handed Ikage their first final for many years and will face Skeen which won four of its group matches and drew one to finish top of the group with 13 points.
