M.C. Weiler Primary School sends young soccer stars to festival

SANDTON – M.C. Weiler Primary School girls participate in the inaugural Forwardzone Girls Football Festival.

The M.C. Weiler Primary School girls soccer team, who are the reigning champions of last year’s Discovery Alex Schools League, participated in the first-ever Forwardzone Girls Football Festival.

The team competed alongside seven other regional primary schools from the Johannesburg Primary Schools Football Association (JPSFA) who partnered with Forwardzone to host the festival.

The one-day inaugural festival was held at St David’s Marist Inanda School in Sandton.

Project manager at Forwardzone, Gabriella Da Luz said the festival aims to develop women’s football in Johannesburg and bridge the apparent gap between boys’ and girls’ football development.

“No prize money or medals were handed out to the participants, however, sponsored soccer kits were handed out to the girls in recognition of their selection for the Festival X1 team, which is purely a recognition element as they don’t get to play at all,” said Da Luz.

“We invited the Alex schools on the strength of being the champions of the Discovery tournament, a tournament which Forwardzone runs on behalf of Discovery.”

Moyahabo Khumalo from M.C. Weiler Primary School was selected for the Festival X1 team.
