Bucs’ quest to retain trophy still on course

The Buccaneers faithful await the outcome of tonight’s draw with bated breath as the side continues its quest to retain the trophy.

A near nasty incident involving Orlando Pirates defender Makhehleni Makhaula almost overshadowed the Buccaneers’ cruising victory, in defence of the Nedbank Cup trophy against the not-so-Hungry Lions.

Up the Bucs’ 4-0 victory demolition of the Motsepe Foundation Championship side was almost dented by Makhaula’s collapse at the Orlando Stadium during the second half of the game and had to be resuscitated.

He was rushed to hospital and his condition is reported to have improved as the Mighty Buccaneers await their next opponents in a quarterfinal draw that will be conducted at the SuperSport Studio 6 this evening (March 18).

Relebohile Mofokeng opened the scoring for The Ghosts with a powerful shot that rattled the net and left the Lions keeper Glen Baadjies at sixes and sevens. Lions’ Raymond Daniels attempted a quick reply to the Mofokeng goal after a good run on the right wing but instead ‘thundered’ a tame shot that never bothered Buks keeper Melusi Buthelezi.

Mofokeng’s strike opened the football heavens and it was raining goals as Tshegofatso Mabasa added the second. Monnapule Saleng thought he had added a third for the Bucs when his strike went in-between the legs of an advancing Baadjies into the back of the net, but was ruled offside.

It was not long before Saleng finally found his first goal for the Up the Bucs, making it 3-0. Mabasa was at his tricks again during the referee’s optional time and banged the Bucs’ 4th goal to seal the victory.

The Ghosts are still yet to draw a Premier Division side in this cup competition so far but with all the minnows gone, the Bucs faithful await with bated breath to hear who their next opponent will be, and what the outcome will be when the match is finally played.
