SPAR awarded for athletics contribution

The annual SPAR Women’s Challenge Series of 10km races and 5km Fun Runs at centres around the country have made it the world’s biggest women-only series of races.

Retail giant SPAR has finally been recognised by Athletics South Africa (ASA) for its long-standing contribution to athletics through its SPAR Women’s Challenge race that spans 35 years.

The retail store was presented with a recognition award by Athletics South Africa president James Moloi at the national athletics body’s 2023 awards dinner in Durban over the weekend.
Accepting the award, SPAR national PR, communications and sponsorships manager Mpudi Maubane said the retailer was overjoyed by the ASA recognition for its involvement in the development of athletics in the country which makes it the longest-standing sponsor.

“Having sponsored women’s road running for 35 years, we value our partnership with ASA,” Maubane said. She added that through its investment, the retailer has not only empowered women but encouraged a healthy lifestyle and provided many talented South African and African road-running women to achieve greatness on the national and international stages.
