Zenzeleni girls, Dr Knak boys are Discovery champions
The marathon Discovery Alex U12 Schools League came to a close with Zenzeleni girls and Dr Knak boys crowned 2023 champions.
Zenzeleni Primary School girls and Dr Knak Primary School boys were both crowned champions of the Discovery Alex U12 Schools League.
This was in the finals of the tournament matches played at the Altrek Sports Facility in the East Bank section of Alexandra on November 1. The matches were witnessed by various dignitaries from sponsors Discovery including the tournament ambassador and former Bafana Bafana, Kaizer Chiefs and Leeds United defender Lucas ‘Rhoo’ Radebe.
Zenzeleni and Ithute Primary School girls played a cautious game with both teams not wanting to expose themselves to possible cracks in the early stages of the game and were deadlocked 0–0 at halftime.
On resumption, Zenzeleni girls were the first to register on the scoreboard when the Ithute keeper played ‘umabambayeke’ and one of the Zenzeleni forwards pounced on the ball and made no mistake in rattling the back of the net.
Ithute replied immediately with their goal-scoring opportunity and the same predicament played itself out with the Zenzeleni keeper with her umabambayeke piece of action and the Ithute forward banged the ball into the back of the net.
A determined Zenzeleni scored two more unanswered goals to earn themselves a golden finish on the podium while the Ithute girls settled for silver.
In the boys’ final, a solitary goal early in the first half of the game from the boot of talented Dr Knak Primary School striker Jason Kekana early in the first half saw his side crowned champions when they got the better of their nemesis Iphutheng Primary School.
