AmaKhosi fans long for heydays

Although the Kaizer Chiefs slogan is 'iKhosi alipheli moya' [a chiefs fan never loses hope], it would seem the fans of the 'former' Phefeni Glamour Boys are reaching a point where that hope is beginning to fade.

Will the once almighty Kaizer Chiefs ever return to their former glory of being the cup kings of the elite Premier Soccer League?

This is the million-dollar question that fans of this once all-conquering club are asking themselves following seven years of a crippling cup drought in their cabinet.
Former player and now head coach Arthur Zwane is under immense pressure to turn the drought tide around for the better and bring back the glory days and smiles on the faces of the AmaKhosi faithful who tasted glory in the heydays of the stewardship of strongman Stewart Baxter.

Speaking ahead of their Nedbank Cup 2023 clash against a stubborn Maritzburg United, Zwane, better known as 10111 during his playing days at Pirates and later Chiefs, alluded to the fans’ cry for silverware.
“I am aware that for the past seven years, we have not put smiles on the faces of our fans in the form of trophies but we are working hard to reverse that sad state of affairs.
“I know the magnitude of the hunger pains on our supporters and that something needs to be done and done urgently but I urge them to be a little more patient as we try to turn the tide,” Zwane said at a presser at the Premier Soccer League headquarters in Parktown.

This season, Zwane said Chiefs have been unfortunate with injuries as the team continues to lose player after player due to this. “This is what also sets us back as we have to constantly shuffle the team around.

“We are also going into the Nedbank Cup without key players such as Khama Billiat, Reeve Frosler, Dillan Solomons, Cole Alexander, Erick Mathoho, and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo but we going there to dig deeper and grind out the results to go into the next round in the hope we may ultimately satisfy the trophy hunger of our supporters.”
