Alex ‘World Cup’ for juniors to play twice next year

The Map Games for juniors which forms part of the ‘World Cup of Alexandra’, as these games have come to be known in the township, will be played twice next year to make up for this year as the tournament returns to full swing.

The annual winter games of the Maimane Alfred Phiri (Map) Games grassroots development tournament in Alexandra goes full swing next year.

This was disclosed by tournament founder and Alex football legend, Phiri, during an interview with Alex News at the launch of the seniors’ tournament on November 15 at the Alex Mall 5-aside courts.

Phiri, who runs the development programmes under his Maimane Alex Development Foundation (MADF), said the games will return to the normal pre-Covid-19 programme next year, with its bouquet of various sporting codes such as soccer, netball and the games for children living with disabilities at the Nokuthula LSN School in Lyndhurst.

The juniors’ soccer tournament of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association, which he sponsors and runs parallel with the netball games, will be played twice next to make up for this year’s programme that could not be played due to logistical reasons- as the Map Games finally picked up speed to return late in the calendar of its normal winter slot.

Juniors usually open the soccer games with age divisions such as the U13, U15, U17 and U19. “Next year I will have the juniors playing twice – in January when the school reopen for the beginning of the year for their 2022 tournament and later in June to fully open the 2023 account of the games and in their normal slot in winter,” Phiri said.

This will include the netball games and the Nokuthula School games, said Phiri, who said he was delighted to finally come back with the popular grassroots development programme that has become known as the ‘World Cup of Alexandra’.
