Danone Nations Cup makes a return

One of the most popular soccer development programmes, the U12 Danone Nations Cup, will make a much welcome return to the South African soccer theatre next year.

The Danone Nations Cup, one of the formerly prominent soccer development tournaments in which Alex schools participated, is set to return to the South African football arena.

This was confirmed by Danone corporate affairs manager Leanne Kiezer during an interview with Alex News at the DanUp Soccer Clinic hosted in collaboration with Discovery Soccer Park in Illovo on July 30.

A number of Alex schools had participated in the 20-year-old tournament which also has a European leg that is still alive and kicking but the South African one was cancelled following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Now that the global pandemic seems to be taking a back seat, we are working hard to ensure the return of this popular soccer development programme in 2023 which should also culminate with the return of the Danone Nations Cup World Finals,” Kiezer said.

She described the soccer clinic as a precursor to the return of the U12 Danone Nations Cup in South Africa, in which various South African schools have participated, winning the World Finals on three occasions in 2003, 2007, and 2009.

After an absence of nearly three years in the football space, Kiezer said the clinics were meant to entice children back to the game of soccer and also teach them match tactics, ball control, nutrition and life skills.

More than 50 children aged between nine and 12 years participated in the clinic.
