Red Bull kasi football flavour Kings Munsieville Magical Galacticos FC are crowned at the iconic Alexandra Stadium after entertaining semis and final matches of showboating skills from Gauteng’s best kasi teams.

Stylish Munsieville Magical Galacticos player Nhlonipho Dlamini’s solitary goal in the mid-second half of the game was enough to propel his side to wrestle the crown to become the new Kings of the Kasi flavour of football.

Galacticos despatched Chego 17 by a –0 scoreline in an entertaining match in the final of the Red Bull Kasi Cup 2022 at the iconic Alexandra Stadium on August 27.

The Kasi Cup was making a second appearance in a row at the home of kasi football at the Alexandra Stadium and was a day filled with showboating skills from Gauteng’s best kasi football teams, right from the semi-finals to the Alexandra legends match and, ultimately, the championship match between Galacticos and Chego.

There was only one shibobo moment in the semi-finals between Galacticos and Basil FC but that was not enough to get the ‘shiboboed’ player to sit out a five-minutes cool down on the bench as per new innovation introduced by the Red Bull Kasi Cup organisers for this year.

The innovation was that if a player is shiboboed twice in the game, he gets to sit out on the bench for five minutes and in all the two semis of the games, the legends match and the final match – only one shibobo was recorded.

Four of the best kasi teams, who rose above the rest in various qualifying rounds and the first teams to take to the field, were Galacticos FC and Basil FC, and after a hard-fought match Galacticos secured their spot in the finals. Chego 17 proved too much for their opponents Bhekilanga FC as they snatched the win to set up a thrilling final with the team from the West Rand.

Ahead of the final, the over two thousand crowd was treated to a thrilling curtain raiser by some of Alexandra’s finest soccer talent. The two teams were made up of former and current Alexandra professional soccer players, including Papi Mngomezulu, Sphamandla Mlaba, and Seun Mashishi.

The final was definitely one to remember, with the first half being heavily contested with both teams playing a cautious game. The second half saw Galacticos come out with guns blazing as they took the attack to Chego and the winning goal came via a well-taken header Dlamini in the 69th minute of the game after the first half saw no goals.

Winning skipper Mpho Patane said both sides had a cautious game first half of the game as no side wanted to give away too much in case they get punished in the process. “Things changed in the second after a pep talk from the coach who told us to adventure and take our chances in the hope we get the goals but if we make mistakes, that’s part of the game,” Patane told Alex News.

That strategy paid off which was also confirmed by coach Tshepo Molapo, who also lauded the officiating on the day ‘as one of the best not seen in many years of the games’.

South African soccer legends Teboho Mokoena, Malombo Lichaba, Steve Sekano, and Joseph Makhanya were also present to show their support for the teams that represented their kasi in the tournament, including games ambassador Siphiwe Tshabalala.
