Alex football team honours Moerane with a win

"We had to honour his memory by doing what we know best. We are truly appreciative of his unwavering support," said Thulani Ndlovu, the chairperson of the club.

Alex-based football club Gomtown Boyz played against Gauteng FC on May 22, the day their sponsor Mpho Moerane was laid to rest.

Moerane was the former Mayor of the City of Johannesburg and a sponsor of the club, and sadly passed away on May 18 after being involved in a car accident on May 9.
“We are shattered by Moerane’s untimely passing, especially when you take into consideration that we all hoped and believed that he will come back from hospital after receiving the news of his involvement in a car accident,” said Thulani Ndlovu, the chairperson of the club.

“Sponsorship is a very scarce commodity, especially for the semi-professional league, and losing Mr Moerane is a definite big blow. We had to honour his memory by doing what we know best [playing].”
He added they were truly appreciative of his unwavering support.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to send our sincere condolences to his family, the people of Alexandra, Johannesburg, his colleagues in the City, and his comrades of many years.”We are definitely poorer without his financial assistance and hope that one of his closest friends will take over his responsibilities and help us from time to time financially as it’s not easy to run a team.”

The club was founded in 2008 with the goal of getting children from Alex off the streets.
