Balfour’s Croesus gives Zebras a drubbing
BALFOUR – Youth Day June 16 sees the final round of the Alex Northrand derby between Bluebirds and Croesus.
Having gone 10 matches without a loss or draw, Croesus Ladies seems set to cruise all the way to the championship of the Gauteng Sasol Women’s League.
The Greek Queens, as they are known to their avid fans, have accumulated 30 points in one of the most successful runs of the club in this league since their formation in 1996. The club was formed by the late Edison Mbatha, also known as Coach Eric, from a group of girls who were making a living in the sex trade in the notorious flatlands of Hillbrow.
In their latest encounter, they walloped Hallelujah Zebra Force 5–0 in a home game played at Northview High School in Balfour on 12 June and are set conclude their matches against Bluebirds Ladies when they clash again on Youth Day (16 June) in a home fixture.
In the match against the Zebras, Zandile Mxasa opened the scoring account from the penalty spot just 10 minutes into the game and the Greek Queens held onto that slender lead until the half-time break.
On resumption, a limping Lerato ‘Pele’ Ruele, Greek Queens’ leading goal-poacher, registered the second goal for her side in the 54th minute before she was substituted for Nicole Simon.
Simon made an immediate impact as she almost scored with her first touch of the ball in her first minute on the pitch. Mxasa got her brace to make it 3–0 to the Greek Queens and Simon made it 4–0 soon after.
The final nail in the Zebras coffin came through the boot of Mapule ‘The General’ Mofokeng five minutes before the final whistle with the Greek Queens walking away 5–0 victors.
