Alex’s rusty Birds are ‘swept away’

ALEXANDRA – Though beaten, the girls are far from being down and out as they showed glimpses of brilliance, says Khumalo.

Rusty Bluebirds Ladies had a disastrous start to the 2021 Gauteng Sasol Women’s League when they were ‘swept away’ 2–0 by Springs Home Sweepers FC.

The opening game of the season, played on 11 April at the KwaThema Stadium in Springs, was described by the founder of the Bluebirds Ladies Football Academy team Malvin Khumalo as a ‘difficult match’, considering that the girls had not kicked a ball in over a year, though the same applied to the Sweepers.

“It was a difficult start to the season after a long time without kicking the ball. The girls showed some glimpses of quality, especially those that have just been promoted to the senior team from the U17 development side, but we still have work to do,” Khumalo said.

“With time, I am sure they will be moulded into brilliant players that can withstand their own ground and adapt to the coach’s tactics.”

The 2021 season comes after the cancellation of the 2020 season after only three matches had been played following the outbreak of the Covid-19 global pandemic.

Meanwhile, Balfour-based Croesus Ladies better known as the Greek Queens to their avid fans, though sluggish, club owner Maria Anthanasouli, said they had a good start to the season as they saw off Soweto’s Diepkloof Ladies 2–1 at their Northview High School home ground on 10 April.
