Portia Modise Launches foundation and coaching clinics

JOBURG – As women’s football continues to face challenges, it’s up to us former players to unlock greater resources for the better, says Modise.

Former Banyana Banyana captain and prolific striker, Portia Modise has launched the Portia Modise Foundation and Academy on 27 March that will see her criss-cross the country conducting coaching clinics for aspirant female footballers.

Speaking at the launch Modise said the foundation aimed to connect the dots in women’s football through football development programmes, mentoring, training, and community outreach initiatives.

The foundation kicked off with a coaching clinic conducted by former players including Fikile Sithole, Agnes Nkosi, Khabo Zitha, Pinky Matjekane, Sibongile Khumalo, Thando Dlamini, Zanele Suzaki, Thoko Mndaweni and current player Andile Dlamini.

The coaching clinic was attended by 100 young girls of various football clubs such as Mito Stars, Hotspurs Ladies, United Ladies, Diepkloof Ladies and Vuyo Ladies FC.

“As women’s football in the country continues to face challenges, it’s now upon us former players to unlock greater resources for the current and upcoming young players.

“The foundation’s mission is to advocate for participation and recognition for women in football by empowering our players through life skills and leadership opportunities,” said Modise, who frequently conducts coaching clinics in Alexandra.

Having scored 102 goals for Banyana Banyana, making her a true legend of women’s football in South Africa, Modise wants to change the psyche of players and make an impactful contribution to the development of women in football.

“We are thankful for the support from the National Lotteries Commission as we are now focusing our work and efforts to lending a helping hand in equipping women in football with the necessary tools ranging from sporting equipment, sporting gear and conducting training sessions.”
