Gunners sell SAB League status

ALEXANDRA – New kid on the block Alexico snaps up the Gunners status for an undisclosed fee.

SAB League strugglers Alexandra Gunners has sold its status to a new kid on the block, Alexico for an undisclosed fee.

This was confirmed by Gunners communications manager Stanley Makhubela when approached by Alex News and asked what had been doing the rounds on the rumour mill in the past week.

“Yes, indeed we have sold our rights to play in the Safa Joburg men’s regional league to Alexico for an undisclosed confidential fee. We have had problems as a club acquiring the right talent to play at that level and we couldn’t, as well, get a full-time coach for the senior team,” Makhubela said.

Makhubela said their woes were further exacerbated by the untimely death of one of the township’s talented coaches, Mpendulo ‘Sandawana’ Gegana, who passed away on 20 January following diabetic complications during the hard lockdown.

“Mpendulo’s death also put extra strains on our resources but we will continue our involvement in football activities in the LFA with our teams in the U10, U13, U15, U17 and our new project of 2021 which is launching a girls’ team.”

On whether all the players accepted the sale of the status and what their future held, Makhubela, who also coaches sometimes, said players that had been with the club for a long time had expressed their displeasure but accepted they were partly to blame as they ‘did not come to the party’.

He said Alexico could only absorb three Gunners players in a squad of about 18 and after a thorough assessment, the rest were ‘deemed not good enough material’ for the new outfit.

“What was important from the outcome of the sale of the status of Gunners was the fact that we managed to keep the status in Alexandra, thereby ensuring that Alex maintains its status of four or so clubs in that league.”
