According to StatsSA, there are more than nine million men over the age of 20 in South Africa that do not have a matric qualification and these men tend to have low self-esteem and become prone to violence in order to assert their authority.

Speaking at the launch, Carling brand director Arné Rust said the project will for a start take 32 men through matric, with the youngest aged 23 and the eldest 58. Most of the men who don’t have control over their own destiny take this as a fundamental human challenge, he said.

“The negative impacts of an external locus of control and the lack of self-worth that goes along with it has been well documented and this is the self-esteem that we trying to restore in men so they don’t view themselves in the negative as worthless and, hence, vent that anger on those perceived to be weaker than them.”

Rust said the sad fact was that now, more than ever, people are feeling more like the world was happening to them rather than them going out and happening to the world. This plays out in the lives of millions of South African men when the odds always seem heavily stacked against them.

The brand has partnered with College SA, an adult distance-learning organisation, that will help put South African men of different ages and from all the corners of the country and from different walks of life through matric.

Three campaign advocates, legendary musician Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, and four former football stars Phumudzo Manenzhe, Siboniso Gaxa, Katlego Mashego and Dikgang Mabalane will endeavour to inspire men around the country to complete their studies.
