Alex’s 2020 SAB League spot will be decided on knockout

ALEX – Alex club to be promoted to the 2021 SAB League will be decided over a knockout tournament on 5 and 6 December.

Clubs affiliated to the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (ANLFA) have resolved to hold a weekend knockout tournament to decide which club would be promoted to the SAB League for the 2021 season.

This comes after a meeting of the clubs involved in the now nullified 2020 ANLFA Promotional League held on 4 November. The majority of the clubs decided to nullify the league that was abandoned following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. They felt the resumption of this season’s league would take too long to finish and may ultimately miss the South African Football Association’s deadline for the announcement of the promoted club.

According to a statement issued by ANLFA secretary-general, Malvin Khumalo, the clubs decided to hold the knockout tournament on 5 and 6 December, with the ultimate winner getting a promotion.

Khumalo said the teams were therefore given the green light to resume training and other preparations for the tournament on 9 November only after having attended a workshop with the ANLFA’s Covid-19 compliance officer on 6 November. The current promotional league is therefore nullified as per a majority decision, Khumalo said.

He added that the clubs would not be required to re-register any players at all and that current registration cards would be used for the knockout tournament. Once this tournament was over, Khumalo said the 2021 promotional season would kick off on a date still to be announced.
