Discovery Alex primary schools football tournament postponed

ALEXANDRA – Covid-19 claims another casualty in the form of the Discovery Alex U12 Schools League which has been postponed to next year.

The South African Football Association (Safa) announcement of the opening up of all football activity came too late to save the Discovery Alex U12 Schools League from commencing due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Just when Safa announced that it had been given the green light by the government to open up soccer fields for local football activity, Discovery, which is the sponsor of the Alex football league, announced that they had come to a decision to postpone their Alex schools tournament.

The tournament representative for Discovery and organiser of the tournament, Raymond Marutha circulated a letter to the schools notifying them of the decision to postpone the tournament to next year. “This letter serves to confirm that our annual schools’ league is postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

As per government directive, the saving of lives and flattening the curve of the global pandemic is priority number one in the country,” said Marutha. He took the opportunity to urge the community of Alexandra not to lower their guard now that the effects of the pandemic were turning for the better.

“We not out of the woods yet and we at Discovery continue to encourage everyone to wear their face masks and constantly sanitise or wash their hands with soap and water.”
