Alex football calendar to be reviewed

ALEX – The secretary-general of Alex football says the association will have to review its football calendar post the lockdown.

Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (LFA) will have to review its football calendar when the time finally comes for amateur football to return to the playing grounds.

This was said by the association’s secretary-general Malvin Khumalo in an interview with Alex News on the status of the LFA’s football calendar post the lockdown regulations, especially in regard to the Map Games for juniors.

The Map Games for juniors normally starts in May and the tournament progresses to the finals that are traditionally held on Youth Day, which is 16 June.

“It’s sad to have passed June 16 which is traditionally the finals day for our juniors,” Khumalo said.

As things stand, all things football at the amateur level are still under lockdown and all activities are prohibited, except for the professional side of the game where some light is beginning to glow at the end of the tunnel for possible resumption, Khumalo noted.

“When the time finally comes for us as amateur football to return to the playing grounds, we will have to review our entire football calendar and competitions to chart a way forward within the short space of time that will be left for the current calendar year,” Khumalo said.

He added the fate of the Map Games for juniors under the LFA would also fall under that review process and all this would be done in consultation with the various stakeholders, including the Maimane Alexandra Development Foundation, which holds the custodianship and sponsorship of the tournament.
