SA Spring Open cancelled due to impact of Covid-19 global pandemic

ALEX – The impact of the Covid-19 global pandemic has claimed yet another international sporting tournament, the SA Spring Open tennis event.

The impact of the Covid-19 global pandemic has forced the cancellation of the second edition of the SA Spring Open tennis tournament.

The sponsors and brains behind the event which also doubles as a development platform, Vision View Productions and tennis mother body Tennis South Africa (TSA) announced the cancellation of the international tournament which was due to be held from 27 September to 4 October at the ‘Old Lady of Tennis’, Ellis Park Tennis Stadium.

The tournament is a combined International Tennis Federation US $15 000 Transition Tour and Wheelchair Tennis Grade II event. The inaugural tournament was launched last year and will now be hosted in 2021 on dates still to be announced.

Following a thorough review of safety considerations, logistical challenges, financial constraints and potential restrictions on international travel posed by the pandemic, it was deemed not feasible to stage the tournament this year, said Mafadi Mpuru, managing director of Vision View Productions.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has posed real challenges to all of humanity, including the world of sport. While still closely monitoring the developments in this regard, we look forward to a Covid-free 2021 when an exciting Spring Open can take place without a worry about the safety of players and the fans.”

TSA CEO Richard Glover said his organisation was ‘deeply disappointed at not being able to host the second edition of the Open this year but the unprecedented decision was due to the global Covid-19 pandemic and the uncertainty that this has caused to ensuring that the event could be staged successfully’.”As we wish for a speedy return to normalcy, our thoughts go out to all those who have been impacted by the pandemic worldwide,” Glover added.
