Central Gauteng Lions honour the province’s best in annual awards ceremony

For the first time ever, the cricket governing body hosted the event in an online video, which had been filmed and edited beforehand.Still, the cricketing community watched with no less enthusiasm as the region's best were honoured in what felt like a live event.

Things were a bit different when the Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) hosted their annual awards on 27 May.

Congratulating the winners in video clips taken from their home were Proteas Kagiso Rabada, Rassie van der Dussen, Dwaine Pretorius, Temba Bavuma, Reeza and Beuran Hendricks and more.The biggest winners on the night were the G&M Old Edwardians Cricket Club and Delfos Cricket Club for winning the men’s and women’s clubs of the year respectively, and Ayabonga Khaka and Bryce Parsons who both won the presidential award.

Then in the senior provincial men’s cricket awards, Josh Richards was named player of the year, Mitch van Buuren was batter of the year, Codi Yusuf was bowler of the year and Ari Karvelas was the player’s player of the year.In the men’s club cricket category, James Warsop of Wanderers was batter of the year (A) and Zaid Deen Kimmie of Florida was batter of the year (B). Scott Conway of Old Eds was bowler of the year (A) and Charlie Dowling of Randburg was bowler of the year (B).

Matthew Smit of Jeppe was the Black Widow batsman of the tournament.There were many more club and provincial cricket awards handed out on the night, as well as commendations for the blind and deaf cricketers, umpires and scorers.

“What a night of absolute celebration, well done Central Gauteng Lions,” said the entity’s CEO, Jono Leaf-Wright during the awards.”Well done to every single person who played such an amazing role in cricket in the province over the past season. You can all be very, very proud.”

Former president of CGL, Jack Madiseng thanked all the players, sponsors, stakeholders and departments of government for their support of cricket, even though the season was cut short due to the lockdown.He gave the new president of the organisation, Anne Vilas, his full support going forward.
