Rays of hope for Premier Soccer League’s 2019/20 season

ALEX – The stalled Premier Soccer League's 2019/20 season could soon restart its final run.

There seems to be a ray of light for the Premier Soccer League at the end of the dark tunnel of Covid-19.

This follows a joint decision of the mother body, the South African Football Association (Safa), and the league to salvage the stalled season which was affected by the worldwide outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Safa and the league met recently to map the way forward towards the resumption of the final run of the league season which has six games left per team before the home stretch of the 16-team league.

After their series of meetings, Safa and the league agreed on a possible resumption of the season at the end of June or in early July but under strict Covid-19 protocols.

Safa president Dr Danny Jordaan told sports journalists that both parties had reached agreement on the way forward towards the resumption of the season and had recommended possible dates for the restart.

“We have forwarded our recommendation to the minister [of sport] and he will advise on the way forward after carefully studying the protocols we have recommended for the teams to follow before and during the start of the few remaining games of the league.

“We’re hopeful the minister will accede to our proposal and grant us the opportunity to complete the remainder of the season as directed by world-governing body Fifa that football leagues around the world must ensure they complete their current seasons by no later than end August,” Jordan said.

A number of leagues around the world have already resumed their stalled seasons, Germany’s Bundesliga being one of them, while the English Premier League and Spain’s LaLiga are set to start mid-June.
