Covid-19 ‘kills’ soccer games of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association

ALEXANDRA – The rapid spread of the coronavirus 'kills' soccer games of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association.

The Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (ANLFA) has heeded the call from President Cyril Ramaphosa to join the battle to control the rapid spread of the coronavirus by practising social distancing.

Secretary general of the ANLFA Malvin Khumalo said they had decided to cancel all soccer matches of the LFA with immediate effect and the status quo will remain until an announcement to the contrary.

Khumalo said they had done so after taking a leaf out of the book of the national body, the South African Football Association (Safa) and the regional body, which is Safa Joburg, to which the LFAs in Johannesburg report to directly.

Safa issued a directive to all its affiliates on 16 March, urging them to heed the call made by Ramaphosa to suspend and/or postpone all football matches and football events that are bound to be attended by more than 100 people until further notice.

Safa said they will remain in constant contact with the authorities in government and that the situation of the games will be reviewed from time to time depending on the development around the coronavirus. This is in the interest of the health and safety of members, including players, officials, sponsors and staff, Safa said.

Khumalo said the cancellation or postponement of the local games included activities such as amateur and professional sport gatherings, meetings, workshops, formal and informal sport gatherings, private and institutional gatherings, and training sessions and competitions.

“Let’s keep our faith, stay safe and calm during these trying times,” Khumalo concluded.

Besides the LFA games that have been cancelled, Safa also announced other affected leagues under its jurisdiction such as the SAB League, the Sasol Women’s League and the ABC Motsepe League, and including any other activities and gatherings, private and community football activities and competitions.
