Local running club celebrates its second year-end in jubilant spirit

ALEXANDRA – For the first time in its short history, the local running club sent more than 30 runners to participate in last year's Comrades Marathon in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

Local running club, Run Alex recently held its second annual year-end function in Far East Bank.

According to the club chairperson, Sphiwe Nkosi, the two-year-old community running club had a number of successes to celebrate. For the first time in its short history, the club sent more than 30 runners to participate in last year’s Comrades Marathon in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. “Eight of them were first time participants of the biggest marathon in the country.”

Nkosi also said that community members responded positively to their call to join the club to fight obesity and other health-related problems. “We were joined by many people [last] year and we continue calling upon residents of Alexandra and surrounding areas to join the club. Running keeps one healthy, both physically and mentally. We want to see more people, young and old joining us in 2020 in order to change their lifestyles.”

Sydney Zulu (75) joined the club in 2018 and participated in the Comrades Marathon for the 14th time last year. Zulu said Run Alex has made things easier for runners like him. “I’ve been running different marathons and winning medals since 1985 following my retirement as a soccer player. Having a club like Run Alex that encourages people to keep themselves healthy can be described as a success. Not every community has the privilege of having a runners’ club,” Zulu said.
