Top seeds Simmonds and Lock ease into SA Spring Open second round

DOORNFONTEIN – Serious tennis begins at the inaugural SA Spring Open at the 'Old Lady of Tennis in Ellis Park, Dornfontein.


Top seeds Chanel Simmonds and Benjamin Lock of Zimbabwe eased into the second round of the women’s and men’s singles events, respectively, at the SA Spring Open at the Ellis Park Tennis Courts in Johannesburg on Heritage Day.

Kempton Park resident Simmonds, the current world number 361, cruised into round two with a 6–0 6–0 win over compatriot Ntokozo Zungu.

Third seed Zeel Desai from India registered a 6–1 6–3 win over countrywoman Snehal Mane to reach the women’s second round.

In the men’s event, Lock eased into the second round with a comfortable 6–1 6–4 win over South Africa’s Alec Beckley.

Takanyi Garanganga (seeded third) also from Zimbabwe drubbed Devin Badenhorst 6–4 6–2, while Bulgaria’s Alexander Donski survived a challenge from South Africa’s Charl Morgan. The Bulgarian Davis Cup player won 6–0 7–6 (1).
