Entries for FNB Joburg 10K CityRun still open

JOHANNESBURG – The FNB Joburg 10KM City Run will take place on Heritage Day to mark its fifth anniversary

Starting in front of FNB Bank City, runners and walkers will be treated to a 10km route experience that will highlight iconic landmarks and feature lively performances by a host of Joburg’s leading performing arts groups.

The iconic landmarks to look out for will include the Nelson Mandela Bridge, FNB Bank City, Constitution Hill, Mary Fitzgerald Square, Wits University and Ellis Park Stadium among others.

The entries for this year’s Joburg 10K CityRun will close on 9 September. The race takes place on 24 September, with the final of the FNB Run Your City Series, the FNB Durban 10K CitySurfRun happening on 13 October where it is expected that one of the fastest times in the year over 10km will be set.

The series consists of three events, the FNB Cape Town 12 OneRun, FNB Joburg 10K CityRun and FNB Durban 10K CitySurfRun.

Over a short period of five years, the series has grown to more than 40 000 runners in the three cities and has attained IAAF Bronze Label Status in two events.

The Durban race is now chasing Gold Label Status. The Label Status means that the series will attract some of the best athletes in the world, which means that South Africa’s top athletes get to race the best on home soil.

As a result, fast times will be recorded on the African continent.

Over the past five years, the series has delivered compelling racing and fast times which will now be shared with the world through the process of a Livestream.

When entering online runners can choose to support one or all four of the event’s charities which are Cotlands, Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, Johannesburg SPCA and Reach For A Dream Foundation.

The Joburg 10K CityRun boasts an impressive R250 000 prize purse. This prize purse includes a whopping total of R30 000 that will go to both the open men’s and women’s winners on the day.

Prize money has been allocated to the top 10 finishers in the Open Category, with the runner-up in the Open Men’s and Women’s races taking home R17 000 each and the final spot on the podium securing R13 000

The series has implemented a Single-Use Plastic (SUP) management campaign. “The aim of the FNB Run Your City Series’ SUP management campaign is to drastically reduce the usage of single-use plastics by 85 per cent at all three events. Our ultimate goal is to host a mass participation road running series that is plastic-free,” said Michael Meyer, managing director at Stillwater Sports.
