Alex runners shine at this year’s Comrades Marathon in Durban

ALEXANDRA – The club's coordinator congratulated eight first-time runners who completed the country's 'ultimate human race'.

A one-year-old Alexandra runners club celebrated its first Comrades Marathon achievement after 27 club members successfully completed this year’s 87 kilometre up-run race from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

Run Alex coordinator Sphiwe Nkosi congratulated eight first-time runners who completed the country’s ‘ultimate human race’, as he decribed it, for their resilience against all notorious hills of the race track.

“Our eight novices were made of Nomusa Shelembe (11:48), Keneilwe Monica Modisapudi (11:05), Sibongile Mvenyeza (11:25) and Nelisiwe Mojela (11:48), who are all mothers but were determined to achieve the Comrades medal and sacrificed a lot to make time for training, including their work and mother duties. We congratulate all these four powerful ladies for their bravery and determination,” he said.

“We also congratulate our male novice runners Joel Magano who was the first to cross the finish line, earning himself the much sought-after Bill Rowan medal (8:31), proving that a gem has been unearthed. Godright Selena followed and secured a Robert Mtshali medal with the time of 09:14, Siphiwe Mahlalela bagged a bronze medal with the time of 10:20 while Tony Motala got a Vic Clapman medal after reaching the Scottsville Racecourse in 11:38,” Nkosi said.

Nkosi also congratulated 63-year-old club member Onica Motsei who completed her 10th Comrades Marathon this year.
