Former Banyana top goal poacher Portia Modise to scout Germany-bound Alex girl footballers

JOBURG – Two girls that will go on football trip to Germany in August will be chosen on 31 May at the Number 3 Square Grounds.

Allianz Global Corporate and Specialty (AGCS) Africa has appointed former Banyana Banyana top goal poacher of all time, Portia Modise to scout for talent for the Allianz Explorer Camp’s football edition.

The appointment of Modise was announced at the launch of this year’s edition of the local talent search tournament at the Wanderers Club in Illovo. The tournament will be held in Alexandra for the second year in a row on 31 May.

The second edition of the local talent search will see two girls from Alexandra being selected to represent South Africa at the camp to be hosted by Allianz, an integrated financial services company, along with giant Bundesliga football club FC Bayern Munich in Germany from 22 to 27 August.

The six-day training programme in Germany will be a mix of on and off the pitch activities to develop the next generation of women footballers. The last edition saw a talented Alex boy flying out to the same destination on the same programme. Tebatso Leshata Sekoaleng, a former Iphutheng Primary School learner and now at Minerva Secondary School, was the first teenager to represent South Africa. Tebatso is currently part of the Highlands Park Football Club’s junior team and an inspiration to teenagers at his school and his community of Alexandra.

The camp is aligned with the Allianz Global Explorer Programme and is open to aspiring footballers between the ages of 14 and 16. The youngsters will meet FC Bayern stars, get trained by youth coaches and participate in off the pitch activities.

Former Banyana captain, Modise, will lead the search for the two talented girls in Alexandra which will include an Allianz representative along with an independent legal expert who will form part of the selection panel.

“As AGCS Africa, we are thrilled to be able to enable two talented girls to become captains of the future through the Allianz Explorer Camp’s football edition,” said AGCS Africa CEO Thusang Mahlangu.

“Our purpose is to develop the next generation of leaders through an environment, which enables them to learn, explore and collaborate with each other.

“The camp will explore and unpack the three topics: dreams, courage, and purpose, on and off the pitch to support the participant’s development to lead in the future. At the end of the camp, the participants will contribute their [knowledge] at the Explorer Series event in Munich and within their community.”

The players will be scouted at a 5-a-side schools tournament which will be held at the Number 3 Square Grounds. Learners of Minerva, Realogile, Kwabhekilanga, Alexandra, and Eastbank high schools, as well as Pholosho Junior Secondary School will compete for the two spots.

The ultimate winners will be selected based on their dreams, courage and purpose on and off the pitch.
