Launch of new National Women’s League delayed to August
JOBURG -– The newly formed National Women's League will commence in August.
South African Football Association‘s (Safa) newly formed National Women’s League, which was due to kick off in April, will now be launched in August.
This was confirmed by Safa in a communique to the teams which have qualified to play in the league.
In the communique from acting chief executive officer Russel Paul, he said the change of the much-anticipated kick off of the new league was due to the involvement of Banyana Banyana in the Fifa Women’s World Cup in France from 7 June to 7 July.
It was felt that it would be unfair for the season to launch in April when some of the teams would have the bulk of their players on national duty.
“It was also expected that some of the players may eventually secure contracts outside the country arising from the World Cup, further scuttling the new league,” the statement said.
The 12 teams that have qualified for the inaugural National Women’s League are:
