Community of 20th Avenue in Alexandra hosts a 5-a-side street soccer tournament

ALEX – Members of the community in 20th Avenue Alexandra celebrated the end of a successful year.

In their quest to forge unity in their area, the community of 20th Avenue in Alexandra hosted a 5-a-side street soccer tournament.

Speaking to Alex News after the event, one of the organisers and a community leader Themba Madonsela said, “The aim of this event was to promote the spirit of unity among the members of our street, 20th Avenue.

“During the course of this year, our community worked together to fight for service delivery and in fighting crime in the area. “We chose soccer because it is a common sport here in Alex that everyone can relate to.”

Madonsela added that last year was successful in terms of service delivery after a number of pressing issues were resolved by the municipality in the area.

“We had a water drainage system and streetlights that were not working for a long time but this year we managed to push the City of Johannesburg with the help of DA’s PR councillor Shadrack Mkhonto to have those problems solved for us.

“We managed as a community to form a strong team that liaises with the municipality to fast-track service delivery,” concluded Madonsela.

Mkhonto attended the tournament and described the 20th Avenue community as a good example of residents unifying and said they were true agents of change.
