Hail the champions

ALEX – The Alex Wolves's U19 team proved too good for their opposition in the Senior Grand Challenge.

Alex Wolves Rugby Club’s U19s successfully defended their Senior Grand Challenge title with a convincing 19–0 win over Kagiso Rugby Club in the final.

The match was played at UJ West Sport, Westdene.

Despite the scoreline, club manager Elias Mpengu said the game was not easy.

“Some of the players who were playing for Kagiso are from private schools and the University of Johannesburg,” he said.

Mpengu added that his players had to show discipline, committment and form a solid defence to beat their experienced opponents.

Tries were scored by different players which the coaches can be proud of. Simphiwe Malaza, Boyce Jobe and Bongumenzi Mbatha went over for the five-pointer.

Mthandazo Mlambo and Thabang Maake converted two of the three tries.

This follows an even more impressive 34–0 (including six tries) drubbing Alex Wolves gave Tshuma Stingers in the semi-final.

That was despite Stingers playing on their home turf in Midrand.

Mpengu revealed that the club will now start playing its home games at Kwabhekilanga Secondary School and was looking for a new sponsor.
