Skeen start defence of Discovery Alex Primary Schools League crown

ALEXANDRA -– Skeen Primary School is keen to get one over Iphutheng Primary School to successfully defend the Discovery Cup three times in a row.

Skeen Primary School’s boys’ team disposed of Emfundisweni 2–0 to launch the defence of their Discovery Alex U12 Schools League crown.

The two-time champions in a row will be seeking to overtake the record of Iphutheng Primary School, who also won it 2013 and 2014.

This was at a time when Iphutheng had one of the best crops of players led by diminutive skipper Joseph ‘Messi’ Maphuruma and Tebatso ‘Phungwayo’ Sekoaleng, who were both pillars of the team and Joseph as their most deadly goal poacher.

Joseph left the school to return to his home province of Limpopo for his high school education at the end of 2015, the year when his team was beaten in the semi-finals of the competition but not before establishing the school as the king of Alex primary schools football.

Iphutheng is still being revered for its exploits in this competition and opened its account on a promising note when they demolished Ekukhanyisweni 3-0.

MC Weiler, who wrestled the crown from Iphutheng in 2015 before losing it to Skeen the following year, also had a good start to this year’s competition, beating perennial underachievers, Ithute 2–0.

Meanwhile, Zenzeleni, who were the favourites in last year’s edition but faded away in the late stages, drew 1–1 with Dr Knak, a team that showed promise in the 2016 competition but failed to keep the momentum running.

Gordon, which has established itself with an unenviable record of being the leading team with the most walkovers being granted against it in 2016 and 2017 after failing to honour some of its fixtures, drew 1–1 with DH Carter.

Last year’s finalists, Ikage managed to post a respectable 2–0 victory against their neighbours, Bovet, who are also perennial underachievers in this competition.

In the girls’ division, defending champions Dr Knak got the start of their title defence with a poor showing after being held to a 1–1 draw by Zenzeleni. Skeen girls showed they still had a lot of the grit of last year in them when they walloped Ithuthe 3–0 in their opening encounter.

Other results for the girls:

Bovet 2 DH Carter 1

Ikage 1 Iphutheng 2

Dr Knak 1 Zenzeleni 1

Emfundisweni 0 Gordon 2

MC Weiler 3 Ekukhanyisweni 0
