Red Bull Box Cart Race ready to roll on Sunday

SANDTON -– The leafy, quiet and posh suburb of Sandton will come alive this Sunday with the Red Bull Box Cart Race.

South African cricket sensation Kagiso Rabada, better known as KG to fans, will be one of the two judges of the Red Bull Box Cart Race which takes over the streets of Sandton on 16 September.

The 23-year-old Johannesburg-born fast bowler plays domestic cricket for the Highveld Lions and will be joined on the judges’ panel by well-known comedian Mpho ‘Popps’ Modikoane.

The globetrotting Red Bull Box Cart Race returns to South Africa after eight years and will feature some of the bravest men and women as they take their hand-built efforts down the hay-baled course hoping to log the fastest time of the day – and stay in one piece.

The race, which has been described as ‘a crazy and wacky’ event is also a family fun day event which is expected to bring Sandton to a standstill as the various teams jostle one another in the hope of clocking the fastest time of the race.

Among the teams of the day will be iGusheshea team led by young black women, who are celebrating their Kasi roots with a unique box cart design.
Rubbish Refineda team that collaborated with street recyclers to craft their boxcar out of re-used materials, will also display its skills and resilience on the day.

The team is part of a heart-warming story which focuses on how people can get together to do something for their community in the name of a greater good. There are many more teams taking part on the day and the public is urged to come and witness the spectacular race and enjoy themselves.
