Alex schoolchildren hone their skills at a Mini Cricket Festival
HIGHLANDS NORTH - Alex schoolchildren have the cricket time of their life on Spring Day.
Aspiring young cricketers of Alex primary schools joined their counterparts of various schools in Gauteng as they welcomed spring with fun-filled games of cricket at Highlands North Boys’ High School.
More than 30 children between the ages of seven to 12 years old, mainly from well-known cricket playing school in Alexandra, Skeen Primary School, and a sprinkle of them from MC Weiler and Ikage were bussed from Alex Cricket Oval in Altrec to form part of more than 800 that participated.
Besides being the number one cricketing school, Skeen is also a keen football playing school and are the champions of the Discovery Alex Primary Schools Cup 2017, which they successfully defended after winning it in 2016.
Head of the Alex entourage, Margaret Marutha, a teacher at Skeen Primary who is also a coordinator of cricket for Alex schools, said 34 children comprising boys and girls who belong to the Alexandra Cricket Club participated in the coaching clinic of the KFC Mini-Cricket Festival.
They were accompanied by six teachers from the various schools in the township. “I am delighted we were invited again for these cricket development sessions which contribute a lot to the improvement of our game back in the township,” she said.
“It is by no fluke that we’re the best cricketing school in the township.
“I would like to thank the organisers of the KFC Mini-Cricket for giving us the opportunity once again to hone our skills and ensure we continue to be the best cricketing school in our community.”
