Birds turn a corner to register two wins of the season
ALEXANDRA – Bluebirds Ladies have finally come back to winning ways as they battle for a decent finish in the Sasol Women's League.
After their recent championship victory in the Maimane Alfred Phiri Games, Bluebirds Ladies immediately left that stage to register two wins of the Sasol Women’s League.
The Beautiful Birds, as they are fondly known in Alex, registered an emphatic away victory of 3–0 on Women’s Day against fellow strugglers Vaal University of Technology Ladies (VUT Ladies) to collect their first three full points since the start of the league in early April.
They did it again this weekend when they registered a 1–0 win over Tuks Ladies from Pretoria at the Alexandra Stadium and bagged a second three points.
The Birds had gone 16 games without a win, only managing two draws which earned them two points and are languishing at the bottom of the log, now with only eight points from two wins against VUT and Tuks.
This means a lot to the struggling Birds who seem to have finally turned a corner for much brighter things expected to come as they battle for survival in the hope of staying in this league and hopefully making the cut for the proposed professional league next season.
The three goals to no reply from VUT Ladies came via newly promoted from the development side, Mahlodi Majola, Thoko Mkosi and the stylish Tshwarelo ‘The Golden Girl’ Digaota, whose surname means gold in her Setswana language. The Golden Girl was at it again as she found the back of the net in what turned out to be the only goal of the match against Tuks.
Nyatama Mnguni handled in the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot but Tuks failed to make use of the opportunity to equalise and the Birds flew home with maximum points again.
After his two victories, Birds coach Malvin Khumalo said, “We are slowly getting better and better as things are beginning to promise though we still have a lot of work ahead of us to accomplish. We have been boosted by two players that have been loaned to us by TUT Ladies and they are behind the value we see now.
“It hasn’t been an easy season for us at all and if we can survive to be part of the first ever professional women football league in this, then that will be a bonus and a giant achievement for Alexandra and its football. We have to keep working. It’s a long way to safety, but we believe, the players believe and the atmosphere is positive.”
