After close to a year in the Limpopo wilderness, Vangile ‘Nyatama’ Mnguni has returned home to the Bluebirds nest.
Nyatama is part of the old guard of the Birds who deserted the nest during the turbulent times towards the end of the Sasol League last season and went in search of greener pastures.
The former Birds skipper joined Ma Indies, the Venda-based Limpopo side that plies its trade in that province’s Sasol Women’s League, but according to her coach Malvin Khumalo, she found the going tough and longed for home.
Interviewed after receiving her gold medal at the Map Games when the Birds were crowned this year’s champions, Nyatama said she had answered a request from her former coach asking her to return and help the team to win the Map Games.
“I answered that SOS and returned home, and here I am I have helped the team to their first victory in the Map Games,” added Nyatama, who got her nickname from her style of her play which resembles that of Orland Pirates midfield maestro Musa Nyatama.
“The other request made by the coach was that I come back and help the team survive in the Sasol League. This call I will answer and fulfil as we begin our journey in the second half of the league. I hope and pray we survive and ensure Alex continues to be represented in the new professional women’s league that is being talked about.”
Before her departure to Limpopo, Nyatama was the pillar of strength for the Birds as she controlled the midfield with distinction and scored vital goals for her side, and literally led from the front as the then skipper of the side.
She again executed herself with distinction in the matches leading up to the Map Games final and if that was anything to go by, Nyatama can certainly carry the Birds to future glory.
