Gunners within sniffing distance of victory

ALEXANDRA - Gunners believe promotion to the Safa Promotional League is now within sniffing distance.

Black Poison earned a valuable three points in their campaign in the Promotional League of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association without even kicking a ball.

This followed the non-arrival of their opponents, Thembisa side Phomolong All Stars, for the game at the Alexandra Stadium. Poison were awarded a walkover of 2–0 and the three points.

Phomolong is languishing second from the bottom of the 14-team league with only four points from nine games including seven losses, one win and a draw.

It would appear the team might have just thrown in the towel following their dismal performances although their showing is slightly better than the league tail-enders, Alex Young Lions who have lost all their nine games and have called it quits in the league.

Meanwhile, Gunners bounced back from their only defeat of the league to Rise Together, to beat Gometown Boyz, better known as Top Dogz 3–1 at the Alexandra Stadium.

The Gunners have now opened a five-point lead at the summit of the log and coach Stanley Makhubela is beginning to smell the championship and the ultimate promotion to the South African Football Association (Safa) Promotional League next season.

“I have always maintained the team that will first amass 20 points from this league will eventually go on to win it,” he said.

“With our 22 points now in the bag, and our rivals [Rise Together] drawing, I can surely say the league is well within sniffing distance.”

Makhubela hoped his boys would be up to the task in the remaining three games and gain promotion to the Safa Promotional League which is only three rungs below the prestigious Premier Soccer League.
