Alex Northrand Birds are humiliated yet again in the 4th straight defeat

ALEXANDRA – Bluebirds in a fourth straight defeat of the Sasol Women League 2018 season.

Bluebirds Ladies have gone four matches without a win and signs are they may well be the whipping girls of the 2018 season of the Sasol Women’s League.

They were humiliated yet again in their fourth straight defeat when they went down 2–1 at home to Home Sweepers Ladies, a Springs outfit they have mainly dominated in the past. The Beautiful Birds failed to soar against VUT Ladies in their opening match, followed by TUT Ladies and then Tuks Ladies.

But they can draw consolation from Sweepers coach Mkhonzana Mkhonza, who described them as a team of youngsters with a bright future ahead of them. The Birds have a fresh new look following the departure of a number of seasoned players for pastures green.

“If given space and time to jell together, they could well be a force to reckon with,” Mkhonza said.

In the game, the Birds started at a slow pace and their inexperienced defence was unable to cope with the triple striking musketeers of Marry Ntshweng, Thwana Shange and Lindiwe Nkambule, and later substitute Nthabiseng Sikhakhane.

The other downfall of the Birds was their poor clearance of the ball out of defence and if it wasn’t for the experience of Devaney Rhoda, who played a key role as a makeshift defender in the absence of regular defenders, the scoreline could have been worse.

It was the stylish Ntshweng who finally found the back of the net on the stroke of halftime with a powerful shot that gave Birds keeper Siphesihle Madala no chance. Ntshweng was at it again in the second half when she laid on a beautiful cross for Shange to make it 2–0.

Meisie Stewart pulled one back for the Birds and Zimi Xabanisa almost got the equaliser with a piledriver which was parried over the crossbar for a corner by the keeper.

Stewart said after the game that players out injured were to blame for their growing number of losses.

“I am confident we shall not reach match six without a win,” she said.

“At some point, we will have to turn the corner for the sake of our fans that keep rooting for us. I say to them hang in there and you will eventually be rewarded.”
