‘Alex should be known for being home of finest leaders in politics, entertainment and sports – not crime’

ALEXANDRA – World undefeated boxer yearns for Alex's past glory.

Unbeaten South Africa’s current IBO world light-weight champion and multi-local and international titles holder, believes Alex can redeem its negative crime and grime image if residents commit to reviving the township’s history of producing the finest leaders in politics, entertainment and sports.

“From its confines of a two or so square mile radius, it surpasses many expansive settlements, and even provinces, in the number of notable national and international leaders, artists and sports personalities who residents should emulate to revive its once glowing image and pride of many,” said the Eastern Cape-born and soft-spoken Xolisani Ndongeni aka Nomeva (Thorn) exclusively to Alex News.

“Many older residents are nostalgic and need urging to re-imprint and make it real again within their many offspring who are lured into crime when they could be role models for many youths who roam the street aimlessly.”

Nomeva, who started out in rugby, another Eastern Province favourite, ironically abandoned the sport to avoid injury. He added that sport, like many occupations, is risky but safe if one knows how to protect oneself at all times. But most importantly, boxing is safe through a strict regime of discipline and training to remain physically fit, along with a healthy diet and staying off the streets.

“There is just no excuse, even in Alex, where, despite overcrowding, there still are recreational sports facilities with others nearby with all sorts of facilities to help one excel and achieve fame locally and internationally,” Nomeva said in reference to the Jessie Joe Gym at Oliver Thambo Centre in Wynberg where he amassed his accolades.

He is currently with Smith’s stable in Fourways.

Nomeva has set his sights high and is motivated by his recent exposure to the best there is in boxing at the Las Vegas-based stable of the legendary Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather’s gym.

Nomvela still has fire, fury and sting from tips he acquired after rubbing shoulders with former and current multi-title world champs like Hall of Fame inductee Thomas ‘Hitman’ Hearns, and Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao.

He discouraged those who let success and fame bloat their egos. “Respect for all elderly people begets wisdom, values and blessings essential for longevity in whatever endeavour,” Nomeva said urging Alex and youth, in general, to care for and help any old and young person they see struggling.

He fully understands the impact of Aids, having served in NPO, Love Life’s Aids awareness programme in his hometown.

Equally, he urged for the respect of teachers and leaders when they advise the youth against negative peer pressure.

He also criticised parents all over the country who ignore misbehaving children.

“Regardless of status, we are all responsible for each other in keeping with the Ubuntu spirit.”

Nomeva lauded many who helped him acquire sponsorship and lightening his load, and those who help the poor – in particular, the Respect and Ubuntu Foundation which donates regularly to Alex’s needy children and the elderly.

“If the young beneficiaries maintain respect and exploit their talents, champions will emerge and make the country, their communities and families proud.”
