Parker saves Komphela the blushes in Nedbank Cup

JOBURG - Kaizer Chiefs leading marksman Bernard Parker justifies coach Steve Komphela's substitution of Leonardo Castro.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela proved to be a master tactician when he substituted Leonardo Castro for Bernard Parker in the Nedbank Cup tie against Lamontville Golden Arrows.

Parker came off the bench and poached one of the three goals that enabled Amakhosi to advance to the last 16 round of the cup with a 3–0 win.

Komphela took a gamble in the face of adversity from Amakhosi fans in the stands who booed him when he called for the substitution. Each time Castro had the ball at his feet, you could hear roars and whistles of approval from Chiefs fans in anticipation of great things from the former Mamelodi Sundowns goal poacher.

However, the Colombian was taken off in the 70th minute with Chiefs leading 1–0 from a strike by Amakhosi wonder boy, Ryan Moon in the 51st minute. Parker found the net in the 84th minute and could have scored his brace had his second attempt not gone slightly wide of Arrows’ Maximilian Mbaeva’s goal posts. The final nail in the Arrows coffin was nailed by Joseph Malongoane in the 84th minute.

Castro was part of the deadly trio of strikers for the Brazilians last season known as the CBD – an abbreviation of Castro, Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly. The Colombian jumped ship during the January transfer window of the Premier Soccer League and joined the Soweto Glamour Boys.

Amakhosi will join 15 other teams in the hat for the draw for the round of 16 on 15 February.

It may be early days in the cup competition but there is no harm in predicting the winner of this competition seeing that there will be a new champion after the exit of two-time champions in a row, SuperSport United. Share your predictions on the Alex News Facebook page
