Birds need a financial nest egg

ALEXANDRA - Bluebirds Ladies Football Club are seeking a sponsor to ease the burden of financing their participation in the Sasol Women's League.

Bluebirds Ladies has issued a passionate plea for potential sponsors to come on-board and assist the team to take its campaign in the Sasol Women’s League to another level.

The appeal was issued by coach Malvin Khumalo who said in an interview with Alex News that such a sponsorship would go a long way towards helping the club to compete meaningfully in the country’s elite league for women’s football.

To keep up with the intense schedule and demands of the league, Khumalo said it was imperative that they secured the services of a sponsor. This would not just take care of the day-to-day costs of running the club but more importantly, could boost its player recruitment drive and make it more competitive in the league.

Khumalo said the current sponsorship from JM Busha Investments only covered the pre-season tournament. “Nothing is available for the league and the team survives on a Sasol League grant which does not properly cover most of the season.

“The grant quickly runs dry as the costs of participation in the league far outstrip the grant that we get. We’re currently hustling around for funding and we would be happy if some Good Samaritans could rescue us by coming on-board,” said the coach who is also a founding member of the club.

Khumalo said the sponsorship could go a long way in the development of women’s football in the township. “I am committed to the development of women’s football not just in Alex but the entire country… ”

There was a time when the financial situation in the Birds camp became so dire that they could not hire transport to take the team to their fixtures and they sought help from the Alex police who gladly came to their rescue.

Alexandra is a community that is plagued by numerous social and economic problems that have led to a high rate of teenage pregnancies and substance abuse and Khumalo believes his football club is one of the noble

initiatives that seek to remedy the situation and keep the girls out of mischief.
