The Alexandra Wolves Rugby Club held an award ceremony for its players for their hard work throughout this year’s rugby season.
Chairman of the club, Tozamile Lukhalo, said he was proud of the young boys and girls for their excellent performances this year.
“Alex generally has a bad reputation and these are the people who will put our township on the map again, so it is important for us to recognise them and make sure that they stay focused to reach the end goal,” Lukhalo said.
He said Alex had a lot of young talent that needed to be identified and make its people proud to be from such a township.
“Gone are the days when Alex is known for drugs, alcoholism and crime, these are the people who will grow us.”
He added that the future of the club was promising. “We have a lot of potential from all the players. We managed to get to the finals this year and that means a lot to us as a club.”
Coach Andile Kahla said the year went well for the club because they won most of the matches they played.
“We had challenges during the year, but that did not let it get to us,” he said. The players were very determined to come out victorious.”
The most awarded player on the day was 17-year-old Mthandazo Malaza who walked away with three awards, Backline Player of the Year, Player’s Player of the Year and Player of the Year.
Malaza said he did not expect to receive three awards, purely because everyone in the club deserved them.
“Everyone gave did their best, so the three awards came as a surprise to me.”
He owed his gratitude to the entire team because, he said, he could not have done it without them.
“We all worked very hard. These awards are not just for me, but for the entire team.”
