The Spar Women’s Race Joburg kicks off on 8 October, but you can get involved in a great charity initiative beforehand.
Dive into your closet and pull out that old musty pair of running shoes you bought back in January, hoping you’d take up jogging this year, and donate it to those in need.
As part of the #RaceUpWithCare initiative with Spar and Caxton Joburg North, community members are asked to donate takkies for schoolchildren who run the Spar Women’s Race Joburg each year barefoot.
These shoes will be donated to the underprivileged schools which take part in the race annually.
Last year, youngsters of Johannesburg Girls Preparatory School and Skeen Primary School were proud to receive shoes and take part in the race wearing them.
So bring your old, almost old or if you are generous, new running shoes to one of Caxton’s Joburg branches or to the race.
Caxton’s Joburg offices are located at 368 Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall, and 1 187 Cornelius Street, Weltevreden Park.

The race’s 10km route goes through the lovely suburbs of Greenside and Parkview, with wide, tree-lined avenues. The 5km route goes past the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens and Emmarentia Dam.
Spar South Rand marketing director, Martin Webber, said since the race was launched 26 years ago, it had all been about the ‘fun element’.
“The run attracts people from all walks of life – girls, moms, aunts and grannies, and men come to support them,” he added.
